Police remain leading agency for internal security, says I-G

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, on Wednesday in Abuja stressed the need for police officers to acquire the requisite knowledge for conducting investigations. Abubakar, who
stated this while declaring open a two-day conference for heads of Criminal Investigation Departments (CIDs) of police formations, noted that the police remained the leading agency for internal security. ''You as leaders in your various formations, must be able to acquire the knowledge, expertise on how to investigate and do it right,'' he said.
''People will see somebody committing robbery, somebody planting bombs and will not report to the security agencies; in Nigeria, people withhold information.
''In spite of the fact there are other security agencies of government, we (police) have the primary responsibility of internal security in this country.
''We have had several cases of high profile murders in this country that are still unresolved and the challenge is on us.
''As a leading agency in internal security, we cannot do otherwise but to do our best in terms of unravelling cases of murder and crimes,'' he said.
Abubakar said that a bad investigator would produce bad report which would lead the country nowhere.
He charged the officers to be professional, adopt modern techniques of investigation, shun all acts of corruption and respect the rights of suspects.
''I want you to take the issue of corruption seriously because if there is a case of corruption in any of the state or zonal CID, I will hold you squarely responsible.
''As police officers, we cannot be lawbreakers, we must be the people to respect the law,'' he said.
Earlier, Mr Peter Gana, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Investigation), said continuous learning, attitudinal change, commitment and networking were some of the essential elements that could assist in handling investigation.
The topics to be discussed during the conference include Investigation and Prosecuting Domestic Violence, Psychological Issues in Policing, Criminal Modus Operandi, Information Security and Risk Management.
The theme of the two-day event is ''Keeping Up with New Trends in Investigation and Prosecution of cases."
